If You Know Ektron Like I Know Ektron 9 Great Ektron Resources

March 22, 2011By Fred Bals Comments

If you know Ektron (like I know Ektron, oh, oh, oh what a CMS.)  Sorry, my inner Eddie Cantor took over for a moment.

If you know Ektron, many of these resources will probably be familiar to you.  But, if you're new to Ektron, you may not be aware of all the resources Ektron provides to the community. And even if you're a (ahem) "seasoned" developer ("seasoned" is what what I call myself, rather than "old") there may be one or two on this list that you've forgotten about or not known about at all.  So, in no particular order, here's a list of Ektron resources I think worth checking out..

The Ektron DevCenter: The Ektron DevCenter is the primo destination for developers working with CMS400.NET and other Ektron products. Check it out for news, samples and tutorials or to ask a question about developing with the Ektron product.

The Ektron Exchange: Part of the DevCenter, the Exchange is the largest library of freeware code for the Ektron Platform available on the Webbernets. When you register with the Exchange you'll get these features, and more:

  • Upload your own code samples
  • Download hundreds of free code samples
  • Post your own reviews of code samples
  • Community of code developers
  • Subscribe to news updates

Ektron User Group on LinkedIn: The best way for the Ektron community to keep in touch, the Ektron LinkedIn User Group promotes education, networking, advocacy and the sharing of best practices among Ektron and is partners and customers.  Join us today!

The Ektron Communities on Twitter and Facebook: Ektron maintains an active Twitter community, with many Ektron executives, engineers and just little ol' employees like me posting on a regular basis.  Whenever I do a list of Ektronites to follow on Twitter, I always leave someone out, so my apologies in advance to whoever gets the short straw this time around, but here's a few of the Ektron people I follow:

@ektron - Ektron's "official" Twitter account.

@bill_ektron - Bill Rogers, Ektron founder and CEO

@eGandalf - Ektron Web architect extraordinaire

@DavidFung2 - Energetic sales engineer @ Ektron.

@twentworth12 - VP Web Solutions @ Ektron

@billcava - Ektron chief evangelist

If you follow those Twitterers and follow the people they're following, I'll guarantee you'll always have the latest word on what's happening with Ektron as well as in the world of web content management. And did you know that Ektron is also part of the Facebook community?  Check us out here: http://www.facebook.com/Ektron.Inc

The Ektron Developers Guide: The first comprehensive guide covering the Ektron CMS400.NET web content management platform, written by Bill Rogers, Bill Cava and Aniel Sud of Ektron.

 Ektron Local User Groups: City-by-city meet-ups of the Ektron community promoting education, networking, advocacy and the sharing of best practices among partners and customers. The 2011 Local User Group tour is already underway, so check out the link to see if Ektron is coming to a city near you this Spring

 Ektron Synergy Customer Conference 2011: Put November 6-9, 2011 into your calendar, because Ektron’s 5th annual customer conference - Synergy - will be the event of the year for the Ektron community! Join Ektron in Las Vegas at Synergy 2011 for over 30 educational workshops, user group forums, roadmap discussions, product demonstrations and more, delivered by industry experts and your peers. Registration just opened at the link above.

 Ektron Webinars: Content-filled live and on-demand seminars on the latest trends and developments in web content management.

or download the audio version.

A personal project of mine, since I love podcasting. We're in the process of creating an Ektron Video/Audo podcast channel for iTunes to distribute our Webinars, seminars and conferences to the widest possible audience.  We're still in the early stages of putting the channel together for the iTunes store, but if you'd like to get a preview, click on the image above to subscribe to the beta channel in iTunes, or download an audio version of our recent webinar featuring Forrester Research analyst, Stephen Powers and Ektron customer, Brian Costello from RedPlum, Evolving Your Web Strategy in 2011. If you'd like to see the on-line video version of the webinar, you'll find it here.

I deliberately stopped at #9 in my list of resources, as I'm sure I've forgotten more than one other Ektron resource on the Web.  If you have a favorite I missed, why not note it in the comments below.

  • Great post Fred, but what you did forget to mention is my Twitter account, the resident Social Media guy, @mikepascucci. I can see how this was an oversight of yours and figured that I would corrent it ;) Mike

  • Wow, I was grinning ear to ear when I clicked on your youtube spot on Eddie Cantor. what caught my eye? My uncle used to sing that song to me as a kid - although he never used the refrain about her "chassie." So all I ever heard was the "If You Knew Susie" part, and the "oh what a girl." Very special memory. But your lead-in re. seasoned people strikes an ironic nerve. Here's how I - a seasoned professional - even got to see this posting. I am seeking a new position as a strategic communications professional and while I meet most of the criteria in most of the web content manager or web content editor jobs I see, I have not had specific experience with CMS. I have redone copy for web sites; I have produced original copy for websites, but a colleague always did the posting etc. Now I find myself at a disadvantage in this Catch 22 situation. If I don't have CMS experience, how can I compete for the job? But, how does one get specific CMS content experience? These particular jobs are more content-driven, and the tech element is as a collaborator with the IT people. I know I can learn it quickly, but seem to be excluded prima facie. How does a person "learn" a specific CMS system like Ektron so they can have that toolbox when they are job searching? Thanks! SK

  • Wish there was an easy answer, SK, but if there is, I don't know it. From an Ektron standpoint, our CMS is used by many non-profit and educational organizations. If you have the ability to do so, you might want to locate a school or non-profit in your area and volunteer your writing skills and in return get training on the CMS. Good luck!

  • I like to think I know Susie like you know Susie!

  • @SK - don't have CMS experience, how can I compete for the job? Ektron Sales Team is here to Help You. The more you know about the product capabilities and functions and the more you can speak to it the better. Getting that first site under your belt is always the hardest so make sure you leverage the right resources. Another great tool to have is the Ektron WROX developers book and certification training. But, how does one get specific CMS content experience? Outside of a project and in-field work the suggestion above still applies. Your sales rep can also get you hooked up with an Ektron Sales Engineer that can help you with prototypes or product evaluation. Check out the contact us page and good luck to you!!

  • @SK - Those are good suggestions from Fred and Curtis. There are a lot of non-profits out there who need help with content and they have decent CMS systems where you can get some quick and dirty experience. The other thing to do is build your own website with an open source CMS. Set up a blog site where you can showcase your personal brand and get the experience you need. Full disclosure, I used to work for Ektron and I have my Ektron developer and administrator certifications. Now, I work as a content strategist for a small university. It really does pay to get familiar with this piece of technology.
